Q: Meds for Bipolar & Donating Blood
For those of us on meds for Bipolar - what limitation does it place on us to
donate blood or blood products? I know, do to the needs blood donors
organizations not to care and accept donations just the same. Sometimes, I
feel a little funny about this knowing the side effects some drugs have. I
wouldn't want to wish these on anyone - especially someone in a weakened
condition after major surgery or an auto accidents.
Dear Earl --
At least for the Red Cross, they have a list of medications about which they are
concerned. None of the regular medications for bipolar disorder are on that
list. Several of my patients are regular donors, a few at my encouragement: it
is something that they can do that helps others, as part of a treatment for
depression.
Here's the
Red
Cross list. Thank you for asking. Lots of people should consider doing this.
