Q:
I was wondering if uncontrolled or high blood sugar could cause a depressive
episode or mixed episodes?
Dear Karla --
I hadn't heard of this so did a search (PUB
MED, entered "hyperglycemia depression") and sure enough, one article notes
that "Diabetes doubles the risk for depression" Rubin.
As for a mixed episode, to the extent that this is actually different
than a depressed episode, i.e. more than the depression underneath
worsening, just as in unipolar depression as Rubin et al reported, I couldn't
find references about this (it gets lost in the noise about medications that
worsen glucose control, a big-money issue right now in the fight between
companies whose medications do this and those that don't).
