Q: Onset of Bipolar - What Age?
Dr. Phelps ~
I have a 32 year old brother that has been diagnosed with bipolar. He has
exhibited symptoms since he was 16 and is not on medication. He also is a
drug addict and alcholic who recently was released from jail for DUI's.
My question is at what age do you see the onset of bipolar? My son is 7
years old and seems to have irrational behavior at times that mimic that of my
brother.
Thank you,
Dear Ms. G' --
It used to be thought that bipolar symptoms would not show up prior to
puberty. And while it is true that most people who end up with bipolar
disorder don't show symptoms in early childhood, it definitely is possible for
that to happen. There are some great resources for you, as you try to
figure this out, at
