Bipolar Disorder, Manic Depression
Defined

Bipolar Disorder - A psychiatric condition defined by extreme, often inappropriate and unpredictable mood swings.

These moods can occur on a spectrum ranging from debilitating depression to unbridled mania, and from a minor annoyance to lifelong disability.

Bipolar Disorder is often difficult to diagnose, due to the complex nature of the disorder.

Bipolar II
Ronald R. Fieve
Buy New $15.61

Thirty years ago, Dr. Ronald Fieve pioneered the use of lithium for what was then known as manic depression. His book Moodswing was a runaway hit.  Since then, Dr. Fieve has focused on patients with mild bipolaritywhat is now known as Bipolar II. In this first book to concentrate exclusively on milder bipolarity, Dr. Fieve explains how newer drugs with fewer side effects are revolutionizing the treatment of Bipolar II.

The "Bipolarity Index"

The bipolarity index system was
recently described in an article by Harvard's Director of the Systematic Treatment Enhancement Program for Bipolar Disorder, Dr. Gary
Sachs.  It represents a "clinical" diagnostic approach -- what matters to doctors and patients when they are trying to understand a particular patient's mood problems. Unlike a DSM-based diagnostic system which emphasizes separate diagnostic categories, the Bipolarity Index places patients on a spectrum.  As you'll see, it also emphasizes diagnostic features other than hypomania." - from Dr J Phelps

This is a very interesting article and a "different way of "scoring"

Self-Injury

Unfortunately suicide is an all too common result of bipolar disorder - it is estimated that 15% of those diagnosed may take their own life.

If you are suicidal right now don't wait - call 911, call your doctor, or go to the nearest emergency room.  You need to get to a safe place.

If you are thinking about suicide there are some excellent web sites you should read.  Some are:
